Podcasts I've Known and Loved

Since I have a strong, un-commenting fanbase here at blog.kineticweb.com… who have recently been asking me what podcasts I listen to… the following is a list of Podcasts I pretty much listen to on the daily, and can’t live without otherwise.

Joyent’s “ps pipe grep”

Found this podcast through Randy and now have completely fell for. Though not a Rails podcast, these industry leaders sponsor a moderate geek-fest every so often. They call this “ps pipe grep”. Sometimes filled with Sun/Solaris banter, these fellows hold a decent dicussions, chuck full of heavy technical jargon. Gotta love it…

Podcast Link

Rails Envy Podcast

Grand spanking news… the guys over at Railsenvy.com have put together a package, chuck full of Rails news. A very good twist on the typical informative Rails scene podcast. I’m just glad I don’t have to scour Ruby article after Ruby article anymore just to impress my fellow co-workers..

Podcast Link

The Ruby on Rails Podcast

Do you really think I’m a Rails programmer and I don’t enjoy listening to Geoffrey Grosenbach’s monumentally soothing voice? Though not chuck full of technical Rails information as of late, this podcast stands as a pillar for our beloved community. Enjoy commentory, as Geoffrey gets hurled around the world to far off Ruby/Rails conferences in far off places…

Podcast Link

The Talk Show

Dubbed by its creators as, “A Single, Unparalleled, Variety, Extravaganza”... probably my favorite of the bunch… This podcast brings together Hivelogic.com’s creator Dan Benjamin with Daringfireball.com’s John Gruber for a talk show thats like no other.

Podcast Link

The Web 2.0 Show

Though this has not been updated as regularly as I’d like, this podcast was a secret pilllar for all things “New Web”. This show brings together Java developers, Rails developers, Microsoft developers, Javascript nuts, Perl freaks and just about anything that has gone into creating the sites that surround us. Inspiring web aficionados listen closely for great tips on building web applications in the 21st century. Hopefully their site will find its stylesheets again so that everyone can run down there and rummage through their deep archive of past shows.

Podcast Link

Off the Wall/Off the Hook

From the creators and maintainers of the digital underground’s free information, hacker community zine, 2600 Magazine. These two radio shows keep me on my toes. Off the Wall hosts editor-in-chief Emmanuel Goldstein for an hour or so discussion of world news and US imperialistic rants. Off the Hook, broadcast from a different time/station hosts Emmanuel and others for more indepth hacker community news and other events.

Podcast Link and this podcast page

FWD Entertainment

Because I can’t seem to finally let go of my late 90s underground dance music party days…. this weekly dose of underground Minimal House/Techno serves as a mind-numbing repetitive sonic backdrop for when I write my code. Definitely not for the faint of heart, or those unknowingly entrenched in modern mainstream corporate crap music. But chill non-the-less if your into this sort of thing.

Ruby on Rails Podcast Drinking Game

We were chatting the other day around the office about how great the Podcast is. Very informative and, frankly, quite entertaining. Geoffrey Grosenbach is an awesome host and we’ve all become very accustomed to his voice and his style. So it’s with great admiration and respect that I present the Ruby on Rails Podcast Drinking Game.

Take a drink when:

Someone mentions “chunky bacon”

Geoff mentions a skating accident

Geoff is reporting from some kind of convention

Drink twice if that Con is outside the US

Drink thrice if that Con is on the continents of Africa or Antarctica

The host is someone other then Geoffrey Grosenbach

The interview subject works for 37 Signals

Drink twice when the interview subject is a women (roundtable doesn’t count)

Drink thrice when the interview subject’s name starts with David and rhymes with Heinemeier Hansson

Finish the bottle when the interview subject is Why The Lucky Stiff

Geoff refers to the interview subject as “the legendary”

Geoff pronounces the “Peep” in “PeepCode” so strongly that you jump out of your seat

Geoff says “Alriiiiight”

Geoff mentions messenger bags

Interview subject teaches Geoff something new, invoking an “Ooooooooh!”

The audio gear used for recording is a brand other then Samson

Be sure to leave your thoughts and additional suggestions in the comments.
